For those who believe the best team always wins the Stanley Cup, then first round action certainly erased that thought.
Both of the Vegas favorites to win the Stanley Cup — the Pittsburgh Penguins and Vancouver Canucks — were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.
To prove the point even further, no recent champions advanced to the second round, including the defending champion Boston Bruins.

The 2011-2012 National Hockey League season was more eventful than most.
Unfortunately, most of this excitement came from the debate over player safety, specifically concussions.
Concussions have become a monumental issue in all sports but perhaps none more so than hockey. This past offseason three current players died; all three deaths were linked to brain issues caused by concussions.
Thus, NHL executives were determined to fight this issue and they chose to do so by cracking down on hits to the head on ice. Brendan Shanahan was appointed Head Disciplinarian and is now responsible for doling out punishment for all questionable hits.

I use words for a living. And more recently, I’ve used words to tell stories and paint pictures.
But I have come to find, after tonight, that sometimes words cannot tell a story or paint a picture the way I would like them to.
Last month, 2010 and 2011 St. Bonaventure University graduate Ashley Sandau passed away after being hit by a car in California.
The St. Bonaventure family remembered her Wednesday night at 7 with a memorial service in the University Chapel.
I had the intentions of writing a news story on the event, highlighting the celebration of her, but I found myself intimidated by this task.

The tragic accident took the soon-to-be St. Bonaventure University integrated marketing communications graduate’s life while in the company of her father in Silver Lake, California where she had eaten dinner just minutes before.
Sandau, 24, graduated with a journalism and mass communication degree in 2010 but returned to St. Bonaventure in 2011 and 2012 to finish her master’s degree in integrated marketing communications. She had been working as a marketing coordinator at United Consortium in Los Angeles.
